The Old Windmill Trail Farm Animal Sanctuary

Mission Statement                Home

If you are drawn to this web site, you must be an Animal lover as am I, and perhaps you will help to create a change, a more loving and peaceful way of life for our Animal friends who dwell on this planet along with us. I ask for your assistance in demonstrating love and compassion to the Animals within this Sanctuary. Thank you so much for your time and effort, because without all of you, this would not be possible.

The Olde Windmill Trail Farm Animal Sanctuary exists for the Prevention of Cruelty to Farm Animals. It is the only Farm Animal Sanctuary in the State of New Mexico. It is established to provide Love, Food, Shelter, Medical Attention, and an Ideal Life Environment for unwanted, abused, abandoned, and/or sick Farm Animals. The Animals residing within this Sanctuary will not be killed, sold, or adopted out from this. Their Home, and will reside at this non-profit facility for their entire lives. We have been caring for abandoned, crippled, or unwanted Farm Animals for three years and received our non-profit 501(c) (3) status in February of 2004. Also we work in collaboration with the Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary, Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary, and The Horse Shelter, all within Santa Fe County. This includes community education in Animal Rights, along with the humane considerations of Animal care. The horses and cattle within this sanctuary are not living within stalls or pens. They are free to roam, play, interact with each other and form their own family units at will... in other words, as close to a natural environment as possible for them.

Our Sanctuary is situated within a valley on 42 acres, surrounded by the vastness of mountains, and although its beauty is magnificent, the altitude of 6,000 feet produces extremely harsh summers, along with the hail, snow, wind, and very low temperatures of winter. It is also a perfect spot to dispense with unwanted animals. Three years ago, three starving and ill, "wild horses" appeared upon our land begging for food. (Later it was discovered they had been released into this valley to fend for themselves). Shortly thereafter, five cattle arrived in the same condition. As more and more animals appeared, this Sanctuary was bom. We now provide love, shelter, food, and veterinary care for six horses (none of which can be ridden), eleven cattle, and a variety of dogs and chickens.  Eventually we will expand to provide homes for pigs, ducks, llamas, goats, and sheep, as well. All of our animals receive individualized attention from two caretakers only. They are myself Karin Brandi, and my husband, Andrew Brandi. Fencing and Shelter are ongoing projects, as all of our animals require protection from predators such as Mountain Lions, Wild Dogs, and Coyotes and also protection from the weather. Feed, for our large animals, is very expensive, especially during the fall and winter months.  Financial assistance with any of the items listed above would be so greatly appreciated.

The Olde Windmill Trail Farm Animal Sanctuary is located six miles from Highway 14, between the villages of Cerrillos and Madrid, New Mexico. Both villages are tourist attractions, reflecting the art, food, music, scenery, and culture of Santa Fe County.  This Sanctuary will become a peaceful spot within which to observe the Animals in their natural surroundings, and perhaps a point of interest for tourists to visit the magical spirit of this Land and the expansive New Mexico Skies.  My dream is to create a Loving and Peaceful Sanctuary, which would become a retreat for Human Beings as well.. .an environment to interact with and be educated by the Animals themselves.. .to become an example of that which our world might become one day.. .all of God's Creations living in harmony. I ask you to assist me in this dream.
